About Family Service
Working to Strengthen Families
The mission of Family Service is to “strengthen and enhance the well-being of families and individuals throughout the life cycle, and to advocate for a community environment that nurtures family life and promotes social responsibility.”
Family Service is a private not-for-profit agency, which has been providing services to families and individuls in this community since 1968. The agency's primary focus has always been family-oriented with programs concentrating heavily on strengthening family functioning.
Services are provided through six programs:
- Family Counseling (Counseling for families, individuals, couples and groups)
- Child Abuse/Neglect Counseling (Counseling and supervised visitation)
- Social Service Consultation (Custody evaluations, contracted services
- Family Life Education (Common Sense Parenting, Anger Management and Children of Divorce classes)
- Healthy Families (Intensive support for new parents qualifying for the program)
- Caring Parents (education and support for new parents)
Family Service strives to bring individuals and families full circle during their life experiences by strengthening their coping skills. The Family Counseling Program provides professional counseling services to families, individuals, couples and groups. The Child Abuse/Neglect Program facilitates supervised visitations and provides professional counseling for children and their families who are victims of abuse and /or neglect or determined to be at significant risk of abuse/neglect.
With a strong emphasis on family life issues, Family Service provides programming to strengthen and enrich the lives of families through the Comprehensive Family Life Education Program. This program includes the Common Sense Parenting parenting classes; Anger Management classes and the Children of Divorce series. Through the Social Service Consultation Program, highly trained staff provides custody evaluations and other contracted services.
By focusing on parent-child interaction, teaching parenting skills, promoting preventive health care, and improving the home environment, Healthy Families Bartholomew County provides intensive support for new parents. The Caring Parents Program is a volunteer-based, post natal home visitation program, which brings education on infant care and safety, infant crying , and child development to Bartholomew County families during the first year after birth.
It is an inescapable fact that today's families are undergoing profound changes which place many new challenges before them. Recognizing that each individual family is characterized by its own unique combination of strengths and needs, it is the goal of Family Service to enhance the effectiveness of the family and the well-being of each individual family member.
